About SEE-Stats

Background

The SEE-Stats inititative commenced in April 2003 covering the Thames Valley & Surrey. The website was re-launched in June 2005 with the addition of real statistics and data from two further sub-regions. East and West Sussex data was published from November, 2005.

The aims of SEE-Stats are to monitor progress towards regional and sub-regional targets, and to promote existing and prospective installations whilst publicising their technical data and various benefits to stakeholders and the people of the South East of England.

The initiative is run by TV Energy on behalf of the South East Sustainable Energy Partnership, led by GOSE and funded through SEEDA and the South East England Regional Assembly. SEE-Stats supports the regional and local monitoring of renewable energy targets as required in the Regional Planning Guidance for the South East (RPG9)

South East Sustainable Energy Partnership

The South East Sustainable Energy Partnership is a partnership of regional and sub-regional organisations across the South East. Our mission is to develop and implement regional policy and targets for sustainable energy, to share best practice and support projects to meet the region’s targets as a contribution to Energy White Paper objectives.

The Partnership currently comprises the following organisations:

Government Office for the South East (GOSE - Chair and Secretariat)
South East England Development Agency (SEEDA)
South East England Regional Assembly (SEERA)
The Forestry Commission
TV Energy
Creative Environmental Networks (CEN)
The Environment Centre (tEC)
Energy Centre for Sustainable Communities (ECSC)
Milton Keynes Energy Agency
Association of Councils for the Thames Valley Region (ACTVaR)
Hampshire County Council
Isle of Wight Council
Surrey County Council
East Sussex County Council
West Sussex County Council
Kent County Council

Methodology

The methodology used for SEE-Stats is compatible with national and international energy standards, having adopted conventions from the renewable energy statistics systems of RESTATS (UK), Eurostat (EU) and the International Energy Authority (IEA). This permits the South East regional figures to feed upwards, as well as enabling inter-regional comparison given the opportunity for methodological uniformity (see below).

The second feature of the methodology is the use of regional-specific standards and capacity factors where appropriate. This regionality allows for more accurate estimates of energy outputs where necessary, and is particularly apt for geographically dependent sources e.g. wind, sun and small hydro.

The third principle is that SEE-Stats includes statistics and data on not only the technical details such as installed capacity and energy output, but also on the socio-economic and environmental benefits of renewable energy sources to the region.
